NIBC History

NIBC was originally incorporated in September of 1981 formed by residents and leaders who aspired to establish self-help programs for residents.

These needs still exist today, as affordable access to safe, healthy, stable homes and neighborhoods for low to moderate income families will always be a critical influencer of the overall health and vitality of communities.

Since Neighborhoods Inc. First opened, many decades of supporting the community and successful partnerships followed. In the early years, NIBC operated under the mission of "Acting as an advocacy agency bringing together resources, community awareness, and community involvement to address blight and unsafe conditions in neighborhoods." Around 10 years after NIBC opened, our priority areas shifted and became focused on neighborhood revitalization activities by drawing on government funding sources to assist homeowners in repairs and rehabilitation of their homes.

In 2015, NIBC became a Community development financial institution (CDFI) member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. Over the years that NIBC has provided FHLBI home improvement grants, NIBC has put over 1.3 million dollars back into the local economy through added economic activity and the improvement of over 160 houses in the greater Battle Creek and Kalamazoo area.
